It’s difficult to give a sense of what AC is like, the only other places I’ve seen like this are in Thailand’s red light areas. Imagine a (manly) pedestrian area in permanent street party mode, with go-go girlie bars lining both sides of the street. The scale is impressive – in a maybe 1 mile long stretch there must be 80 bars, each with 30-800 dancers! Yep, the 4 biggest bars (Atlantis, Dollhouse, Blue Nile and Golden Nile) have about 3,000 dancers between them. Unbelievable – but there to see for yourself any time you choose. All these girls are available on a ‘pay for play’ basis IF the girl likes you. I got turned down 3 times in 5 days here, was shooting very high for some absolute stunners – so wasn’t too surprised to get (politely) turned down.

This kind of place doesn’t suit me, I like to get up much closer to the gals and have a chance at some banter – these girls were physically quite distant and didn’t really seem interested in getting laid. All very odd, why work in a bar when all you can earn is 200 pesos a night ‘salary’?

Half an hour of that crap (it was also freezing cold inside) and I suggested we move on to another nearby club where they have live music. Jenalyn was happy to go along with anything at all (these women are SO compliant) and so we sloped off to Blueberry Hill, on our way back to the hotel anyway. This is a different setup and one I would recommend if you’ve already got your honey-ko for the night. There is a solo singer and a troupe of perhaps 10 dancers behind. A guy and his girlfriend (?) were the main entertainers and they were truly excellent. It has a nice ‘club’ feeling and is not like a go-go bar pickup joint at all. We made friends with the girl singer and a very cheeky little waitress who kept us laughing all the time. A great night - leading to the Main Event …

Boy, I was FAMISHED and skipped an early morning romp in favour of some grub. Based on the previous night’s performance I arranged to BF Jenalyn for another night, so she needed to disappear for a couple of hours to get a change of clothing and make arrangements with the mamasan. Breakfast was followed by email catchup and some more diary writing took up the rest of the morning. A trike is always an option, but I worry that once I get my fat arse into one of those low-slung things, I’ll need a crane to get me out!

Hmmn – seemed like I had made a mistake in my selection of a hotel, research can only take you so far, local knowledge always has the edge. I definitely wanted to be in the centre of the mucky action – to hell with the tourist resorts! Steve had lived in Barrio Baretta for 3 years, so knew the place very well (it’s only 1 bloody street after all!)  Steve suggested a low-budget hotel called the T-Rose, right in amongst the action. He had their phone number on his cell phone, so I gave them a call, looking for his recommended room 8, the biggest and on the ground floor with its own entrance from the street. Sounded IDEAL.

By now it’s 5pm and I’m tired of diet coke (I generally stay ‘dry’ during the day), so I figure I’ll wander back to the hotel for a nap. I’m so relaxed by now I can sleep at the drop of a hat.

I awoke in darkness, it’s already 19:30, so I showered and made a bee-line for Golden Nile, where the guys from Asian Escapades were meeting. I grabbed some grub at sub-delicious and wandered past the bars, evading the door girls as best I could. Once again I was accosted by the same cheeky girl outside Honeypot and we soon had some banter going again. Golden Nile is a BIG place, occupies floors 3 & 4 of a building g right at the beginning of Fields Ave. An elevator takes you up inside to the (by now) familiar multi-level display of bikini girls. First impressions of Eddie’s Hotel www.eddieshotel.com.ph were very positive, the staff were welcoming and booking in was hassle-free. I had booked a superior room on the ground floor via AsiaTravel (because the hotel website is a bag of crap) and got a 10% Asian Escapades discount, paying 2130php (£30) a night. I had read that Eddie’s may discourage girls staying overnight, others had said they charge a supplement – since the extra for double occupancy was only 150php (£2.50) a night, I decided to book that to avoid any possible issues. In fact I detected no issues about lady guests at all – several punters and their GFs used the dining room for both dinner and breakfast. There were quite a few locals dining too – nobody batted an eyelid.

The bar area tends to be used by people who’re dining, not a drinking spot really. Prices reasonable, 50php (about £0.80) for San Mig Light. Perfectly acceptable standard of food, certainly adequate for breakfast – allow 250php per person for that.

The hotel has wi-fi throughout, though there isn’t a PC, so you’re knackered if you’re not toting a laptop. Plenty of Internet cafes nearby though.

The room was large, with 2 queen sized beds, good sized walk-in shower (suitable for 2 or 3 people) Aircon worked well, no fridge though, cold drinking water supplied via a Thermos.

The BIG plus for Eddies is it’s got location, location, location – just a 100 yards away are a dozen girlie bars, 2 of which I really rated … though in just 5 nights I didn’t manage to work my way through them all.     

Prior to arrival I had been studying the reviews on Asian Escapades (AE) and elsewhere – and compiled a hit list of bars and places to visit. By the time I had checked in and taken a shower it was 21:30 and I was feeling the effects of my long journey Cyprus/Dubai/Manila/Cebu … some 17 hours in all. So I went for a top-rated bar called Stripes (not in the adjacent strip) as my 1st stop. I noted the name of the Aussie owner (David) and grabbed a taxi, which eventually found the bar in some remote spot (it seemed at the time).

I walked into the bar and ordered a drink – saying “is Mr. David here tonight?”  I wanted to cover up the fact that I was a cherry boy and a bit apprehensive about being detected as being one. The barmaid asked “are you a friend of Mr. David?” and I said a friend of Mr. David asked me to drop by …”.  She then jabbered away to one of the other girls and I could tell a signal shot around the small group of girls who were in the immediate vicinity – I was “a friend of Mr David” – and must be about as far away from being a cherry boy as possible. I had memorised the ‘check-list’ from the AE guys, ALWAYS run through these points before bar-fining (also known as an EWR, “Early Work Release”) a girl.

2) How long have you been working here? If only a few weeks, ask about previous bars – I didn’t want an apprentice, much preferred a girl with a couple of year’s experience.   

3) Are you on menstruation? To avoid any cop-out when you get back to your room.

4) How much is your bar fine?

6) Do you do anal? These girls are called 3-holers, so you could say “are you a 3 holer?” instead. That may seem a bit blunt, but these sweet things have heard it all before.

So, with warning bells ringing in my ears I disregarded the advice about not sticking with the same honey that I fell for – off I went to meet Jana at Stripes and bought her our in fairly quick time. She was hungry so we grabbed a quick meal at a fast food joint, before heading back to the hotel for a repeat performance … even better than the first!
